With a background in music theory, sound design and studio engineering, Jim's approach to the use of finger cymbals in Middle Eastern dance performance focuses on musicality and tonal variations within rhythmic patterning. After experimenting with a variety of products available, Jim turned to Harry Saroyan to meet his needs in tonality, action and design in custom finger cymbals.

Playing a different set of cymbals in each hand offers a tonal variation within rhythmic patterns. This set is designed so that the German Silver cymbal is played on the tthumb of the dominant hand, the “dum” hand. The slight dissonance created on this hand can be controlled by using the 1st & 3rd fingers gently muting or releasing the cymbal attached to the finger.
